Frederick O’Hara was born on August 6, 1904 in Ottowa, Canada. His family move to the state of Virginia in the U.S. in 1918 when he was 14 years old. At age 17 he got a job as a copy boy at the Boston Globe newspaper and in 1922 also began studying art at the Massachusetts Art School., graduating in 1926. He then studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
