This catalog is an ongoing inventory of the paintings of Frederick Ferdinand Schafer, a nineteenth-century landscape artist of what is sometimes called the San Francisco or Rocky Mountain school. Though Schafer was born in Germany, most of his known works were painted in America, in California and other far western states, between 1873 and 1911.

Frederick Ferdinand Schafer (August 16, 1839 - July 18, 1927) was a German-born American painter. He was born in Braunschweig, Germany and he emigrated to the United States in 1876, at age 37. He opened a studio on Montgomery Street in San Francisco, and he lived in Oakland, Over the course of his career, he did over 500 paintings.Born: August 16, 1839, Braunschweig, Germany

Frederick Ferdinand Schafer (1839-1927), an itinerant German landscape painter based in California, worked in Utah in 1886, 1891, and 1893, where he may have had a studio in Salt Lake City's Dooly Building during part of the year.
