Gaspar Becerra - Spanish Artist From Art History. Gaspar Becerra began his career in Italy working as an assistant to Vasari in Rome. He returned to Spain in 1557 and began working on an altarpiece for the Astorga Cathedral a year later. Becerra became court painter for Philip II in 1562. His familiarity with Italian art helped him secure the position and a highly respected reputation among the Spanish nobility.
