Gaye Chan was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to the United States when she was twelve years old. She received her Bachelor of Fine Art degree from the University of Hawai'i and her Master of Fine Art degree from San Francisco Art Institute. Gaye Chan [b. 1957, Hong Kong], a conceptual artist, and Nandita Sharma [b. 1964, Bhopal, India], an activist scholar, collaborated to plant papaya seedlings on public land near their house in Kailua, Hawaii in 2003. While growing and sharing food, the gesture simultaneously problematized the concept of ‘public’ space and the laws governing its use.
