Geoff Dyer was born in Hobart, Tasmania. He has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally since 1970 and is represented in many major collections, both in Australia and overseas. In 2003 he was awarded the prestigious Archibald Prize for his portrait of Tasmanian writer and environmentalist Richard Flanagan.

Born in Hobart in 1947 and growing up in the southern Tasmanian suburb of Moonah, Dyer came to art early in life, attending drawing classes and completing his first oil painting at the age of eight.

Predominantly a landscape painter, Geoff Dyer paints a portrait once a year for the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ Archibald Prize, Australia’s oldest and best-known visual arts award.
