George Deakins (1911-82) began painting to relieve the boredom of German raider patrol on a British Cruiser in the Indian Ocean during World War 2. After three years of daily painting in the tropics, his ship returned to the UK and his first sale was in the Scottish Royal Academy of 1943, since which time he had over 50 one man shows all over the world and exhibited many times in London and the Paris Salon.

david george deakins 1944- I started painting with a palette knife in oils at the age of 8. My first picture was a seascape 3.5" x 2.5" - which I still have. I spent many hours observing my father (who started painting with a knife while on convoy duty during WW2 in the Royal Navy) at home and in his cabin aboard ship when in Portsmouth.
