As an artist, George Mackley devoted much of his early work to the art of etching. Around 1930, however, a chance meeting with Noel Rooke converted Mackley to wood engraving. Mackley took some basic instructions from Rooke and carefully studied the works of other great contemporary wood engravers such as, Agnes Miller Parker, Blair Hughes Stanton, Robert Gibbings and Joan Hassall.
