George Wagstaffe is a Coventry based artist, known predominantly for his sculptures in Coventry centre and other major cities. . Born just before the outbreak of World War II, George grew up witnessing first-hand the destruction and devastation of the 1940 Blitz in both Coventry and Birmingham. These images have stayed with him and been a major influence on his work throughout his life.

George Wagstaffe studied at Coventry College of Art and later attended courses at Leicester College of Art and Slade School of Fine Art, University College, London. In 1958 he won a prize for his sculpture, Naiad, at the Young Contemporaries exhibition held at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. As a consequence of this early success he received his first public commission.

George Wagstaffe. Born 1930, Coventry. George Wagstaffe studied at Coventry College of Art from 1955-60 and in 1957 won the Sculpture Prize in the Young Contemporaries exhibition at the ICA. He lectured at the Lanchester Polytechnic from 1961-64 and became a visiting lecturer at the Mid-Warwickshire College of Art.

George Wagstaffe has made a new water stoup for St Mary Magdalen Church in Chapelfields in Coventry, the ‘church with the blue roof’ on the corner of St Thomas Whites and Hearsall Lane.

Local artist George Wagstaffe has changed it from a bird and used a young person to symbolise the new city and its people rising from the flames of the bombed and burnt city. It was first made in resin and metal and unveiled in May 1962 by H.R.H. Princess Margaret.
