Death place Edinburgh. Edinburgh-born George Willison was much aided in his career by his wealthy uncle, George Dempster, who sponsored his nephew's training in Edinburgh and, from 1760 to 1767, in Rome. Willison returned to work in London until Dempster, who was Director of the East India Company, secured a post for him at the court of Mohamed Ali Khan Walejah, Nawab of the Carnatic.

George Willison, an Edinburgh artist, studied under Anton Raphael Mengs (1728-1779) in Rome in the 1760s, moving to London in 1767 where he exhibited at the Society of Artists 1767-1770 and the Royal Academy 1771-72. In 1772 he applied to the East India Company for permission to travel to India, which was granted on 31 December 1772, after which he set out for Madras, arriving in 1774.

He was a son of David Willison, an Edinburgh printer and publisher, and grandson of John Willison.His uncle George Dempster of Dunnichen sent him to Rome to study art. There from 1760 to 1767, he worked initially under Raphael Mengs.On his return he settled in London.
