Woodcut. Nolde made most of his 203 woodcuts during productive bursts in 1906, 1912, and 1917. This, however, is one of four he created during a three-week trip to Hamburg in winter 1910. Nolde exploited the grain of the wood to depict the rolling swells of the sea against the blackness of the fishing steamer.
