Introduced in 1980, the SG R1 was a limited run of 200 units, distinguished by it's active electronics designed by Bob Moog (first introduced on the RD model). This would be the first ever SG with active electronics, and also has a 1/4" thicker body to accommodate the electronics. In 1981, it was renamed the SG Artist but was soon discontinued.

Mar 05, 2009 · I hate to just jump right in with a problem but I found this forum looking for others with a SG R1 Active electronics guitar. I guess this is the precurser to the SG Artist that was a big flop. Hence the limited run of 200 or so. ... the closest they could come is of one of the Gibson Artist guitars from the late 70's. Not helpful.
