Biography (courtesy Askart: The Artists' Bluebook): New Jersey born Gilbert Gaul studied at the National Academy of Art and the Art Students League and was a member of the National Academy of Design. He worked as an illustrator for Harper's Monthly and made numerous trips West to record visual images during the late 1870s, often living on Army posts and with Indian tribes.
