Barbara Gilhooly was born in North Dakota in 1963. She attended the University of North Dakota and received her BFA in 1986. Concentrating on printmaking and sculpture, Gilhooly earned her MFA from Colorado State University in 1989. Gilhooly works as a professional artist and maintains an active exhibition schedule.

Gilhooly left TB-9 for one semester to become Manual Neri’s assistant and began making art out of lumber, fur, neon lights and asbestos shingles. In 1969, Gilhooly took a teaching position at the University of Saskatchewan in Regina, Canada. He followed this, teaching for seven years at York University, in Toronto, Canada.
