Gino Severini nasce a Cortona, in provincia di Arezzo, il 7 aprile 1883. Studia alla Scuola Tecnica di Cortona fino al 1899, anno in cui si trasferisce a Roma. Qui frequenta i corsi d'arte a Villa Medici e verso il 1901 incontra Umberto Boccioni. Insieme visitano lo studio di Giacomo Balla, dove vengono introdotti alla pittura divisionista.
