Edward T. Grigware (1889-1960) was already a well-known American artist and illustrator before he moved from Chicago, Ill., to Cody, WY., in the 1930s. He attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and spent time working as a commercial artist.

Grigware grew up in Spokane, Washington, and moved to Chicago around 1911, where he became interested in advertising and commercial art. He painted naval subject matter during his time with the U.S. Navy in the 1930s and 40s, before moving from Chicago to Cody, Wyoming. He lived out the rest of his life there, painting the Western landscape.

Helen Grigware Lambert’s early paintings were figurative and rendered in a dark palette. By 1970, her style had become increasingly abstract, with lively colors and passages of white. Edward T. Grigware was raised in Spokane, Washington, and as a young man he joined two of his brothers playing baseball in the Spokane City League, the region’s first professional league. After three years, he moved to Chicago, Illinois, in 1911 and studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts (which later became the School of the Art Institute of Chicago), receiving their first scholarship.
