May 28, 2018 · Some have a Dearmond 1000 or 1100 pickup, some have a Guild Humbucker and the Benedetto series have a Benedetto pickup There are few Artist Awards with an 18 inch lower bout. Also bear in mind that the first of these guitars (in the 50's) were called the Johnny Smith Award, as were the last of these guitars ( which were made in Corona California).

The Guild shown here, from 1960, has an ornate headstock, stairstep pickguard, and a simple-yet-elegant tailpiece. Ironically, Smith never used one, due to a disagreement over the way the top was carved. The effort, however, wasn’t totally without reward for Guild, as it used the design to produce the Artist Award model.

2004 Guild Benedetto Johnny Smith Artist Award. This Artist Award is in extremely excellent condition. It almost appears to have never been played. There are four small spots of discoloration on the binding due to the guitar being on a rubber stand. These spots will be visible in our pictures.
