The artist Gustave Van de Woestyne has been associated with the Ghent museum for decades. As early as 1913, the museum acquired the Portrait of Prudence De Schepper (1910), the artist's wife. In the course of the 20th century paintings were added as Farmer (or Evening ; 1910), Farmer's wife (1913), Hospitality for strangers (1920), Christ in the Desert (1939), and - in 1991 - Fugue (1925).

During the First World War, he was based with his family in Great Britain, where he became acquainted with businessman and art collector Jacob de Graaff, who would continue to support him as well as other artists from the Latem group.

As young artist, Van de Woestyne was noticed quite quickly, and in the years before the First World War, he was able to participate in important international exhibitions in Amsterdam, The Hague and Venice. He was also a guest of the Brussels’ avant-garde group La Libre Esthétique. Van de Woestyne lived in Latem until 1909.
