In 1874 Johnstone was listed solely as a professional artist (i.e. painter) in the Melbourne Directory. His oil paintings, By-Road at Seymour and Sketch of the Yarraman, on the Dandenong Creek, were praised for their naturalism when shown with the academy in 1875.
