Francoise Jean was born on June 2,1953 in Anglais, located in the south of Haiti. At the age of nine she helped her family by drawing rural scenes on clothes for her mother to embroider. She moved to Port-au-Prince in 1967 and lived near noted artist Petion Savainches In 1968 she began working with him, painting pictures depicting children, refusing to paint adults.

She was interested in drawing as a child and when she moved to Port-au-Prince as a teen ager, she began painting with Petion Savain and when he passed away in 1973, her teacher was Jean Richard Coachy. She paints children only, saying that children are her inspriration.
