Hassel Smith. Hassel Smith was born in Sturgis, Michigan in 1915, a small factory town between Detroit and Chicago. While attending Northwestern University, Smith was exposed to painting at the World’s Fair in Chicago and became inspired by artists Salvador Dalí and Marcel Duchamp. The two artists opened up Smith to new ideas and became the driving force behind his interest in Abstract Expressionism.

During childhood and adolescence his family alternated between homes in Michigan and the West Coast, due to the health of his mother.
