Henry Emerson Tuttle is widely considered one of America’s greatest twentieth-century etchers of birds. Largely a self-taught artist, Tuttle suffered from a kidney disease as a child, leading him to spend large amounts of time quietly observing bird life in the woods.

Henry Emerson Henry Tuttle is best known for his etchings and illustrations of birds. Tuttle’s career as an artist did not begin until 1925, when he was 35 years old. His etchings were so well received that he devoted himself to art from then on. Tuttle also served as Curator of Prints at the Yale Art Gallery in the 1930s and 1940s.

Henry Emerson Tuttle's original drypoint engraving, "Sea Gull" is a masterpiece of engraved art. Composed solely in the drypoint medium, it was commissioned by The Print Connoisseur in 1928 in a sole, limited edition of 100 signed impressions. Using the rich, velvety contrasts of this medium, Henry Tuttle has here brilliantly caught the majesty of this bird in flight.

Henry Emerson Tuttle's original drypoint engraving, "Raven on a Stump" was created by the artist in 1945. A masterwork of both accuracy and artistry, it is Henry Tuttle's last engraving before he died in 1946. In 1950 the Print Club of Rochester acquired the plate and printed a small edition for its presentation engraving.
