Born in Leipzig, Germany in 1904, Hartung studied at art schools in both his hometown and Dresden. In the years preceding the outbreak of the Second World War he settled in Paris, where he became acquainted with artists including Wassily Kandinsky, Alexander Calder and Joan Miró, and struck up a close friendship with sculptor, Julio González.

The artist was effectively already forty-three years old when, in 1947, Lydia Conti organised his very first personal exposition in France, whilst Alain Resnais, a young filmmaker, and still a student, made a film showing Hartung at work in his studio in Arcueil, a vibrant account of an artist who "loved painting in silence and isolation" (P. Daix, Hartung, Paris, 1991, p. 173).
