Hollingsworth’s career as a professional artist began in 1934, when he was spending his peak hours as a clerk. The year he left FERA, committed himself to painting, and was without a regular paycheck was perhaps the very worst of times for an artist to be on his own, especially in Mississippi, economically the poorest state in the nation.
