Realizing early on that he wanted to be an artist, Watson sought the advice of Thomas Mower Martin and moved to Toronto in 1874. In Toronto, he worked part time with John A. Fraser and Henri Perré at the Notman-Fraser photography studio. He copied paintings at the Toronto Normal School and met other artists, such as Lucius O’Brien.
