Scottish painter, born in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, Australia. Shortly after he was born his parents left for Kirkcudbright in Scotland, where he remained for most of his life. He was associated with the *Glasgow Boys and was strongly influenced by Japanese art, spending eighteen months in the country in 1894–5.

He studied for three years at the art school at Edinburgh, and for two years at Antwerp under Professor Verlat.
