Huda Lutfi was born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1948. In 1983 she received a Ph.D. in Islamic Culture and History from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Lutfi was a professor of Islamic cultural history at the American University in Cairo (1983-2009) and experienced teaching briefly in Boston from 1991-1992 when she was invited to lecture in Arab history and culture at Harvard University.
