Paton was one of the few of his generation to work "en plain air", the fashion then being to complete landscapes in the comfort of a studio. Waller Hugh Paton, brother of Sir Joseph Noel Paton, was born in Wooers-Alley, Dunfirmline and gained his formative artistic training from John Houston R.S.A. He is hailed as the first Scottish painter to paint a complete picture in the open air, with his favourite subjects being the dramatic mountainous scenery of Perthshire, Aberdeenshire and most notably Arran, particularly at sunset as in the present work.
