Ian Fairweather, (born Sept. 29, 1891, Bridge of Allan, Scot., U.K.—died May 20, 1974, Brisbane, Austl.), Scottish-born Australian painter known both for his dramatic paintings that combined Chinese and Aboriginal influences and for his eccentric lifestyle. Fairweather was the son of James Fairweather, a surgeon general for the Indian army.

Exhibitions Leading an itinerant existence throughout Asia for much of his life, Fairweather, was born in Scotland. He completed his formal studies at The Hague Academy, Amsterdam and the Slade School of Art, London, but a far greater influence on his work was his observations of Chinese calligraphy.

During the 1930s and 40s Fairweather lived a nomadic existence, travelling extensively in Canada, China, Indonesia and Australia. From 1949 he also regularly exhibited at Macquarie Galleries in Sydney, where his work impacted local artists, including Tony Tuckson, whose own abstract painting has echoes of Fairweather's calligraphic style.

After his rescue (by Maie Casey) and subsequent extradition to England, Fairweather returned to Australia in 1953, his family chipping in to pay his fare. He arrived in Sydney but went immediately north, back to Bribie Island in Queensland which he had briefly visited in 1949.
