Kiuguk (Kiawak) Ashoona was an accomplished sculptor and printmaker from Tariugajak, NU who later on relocated to Kinngait (Cape Dorset). Ashoona began carving in 1940 at the age of fourteen, making miniature sleds out of walrus ivory.

Ottokie comes from a family of Inuit artists, his father Kaka and his uncle Kiawak were the two most renowned Cape Dorset carvers, his grandmother Pitseolak Ashoona was a famous graphic artist. His older brother is Ohito Ashoona, who is also a carver.

Pitseolak Ashoona, RCA, her great grandmother (Qaqaq Ashoona’s mother) was a legendary artist for her drawing, prints and paintings. She was one of the first artists to make drawings for the print studio in Cape Dorset in the early 1960s. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts and received the Order of Canada in 1977.
