James Irving Holcomb was born in LaSalle, Illinois on May 1, 1876. He attended the University of Michigan, and, at the age of 20 started his first business in Sullivan, Indiana. Partnering with Fred Hoke, they formed Holcomb and Hoke Manufacturing Company and manufactured cleaning brushes.
