Jun 28, 2016 · Mark, iTunes has absolutely no concept of "last name." It simply does a lexical sort on the text in the Album field. If you wish to leave the Artist name as it is, but override it for sorting purposes, you can enter data in the Artist Sort As field, which is on the Sorting tab for each song. Use the format "Lastname, Firstname" to get the sort that you want.

Oct 11, 2007 · Q: I have always wondered why iPod and iTunes sort artist names alphabetically by first name rather than last name. “John Coltrane” is in the Js, not the Cs. Yet, in any (brick & mortar) music store, CDs are sorted by last name. My CD collection is sorted by last name. So I am wondering why Apple set up iPod and iTunes this way.

Feb 24, 2009 · Until today, I was very confused by the fact that iTunes sorted some of my artists by last name and some by first name. Then I figured out why – when editing the mp3/aac meta tags, you can specify custom sort fields. To change the sort field, select one or more songs, right-click and Get Info.
