Ivon Hitchens was born in London in 1893, the only son of the painter Alfred Hitchens and his wife Ethel. After attending Bedales School, Hitchens studied first at St John’s Wood Art School in 1911 and then the Royal Academy Schools from 1911-12, again from 1914-16 and finally 1918-19.

May 08, 2019 · I n 1939, British artist Ivon Hitchens bought six acres of woodland in Sussex. This turned out to be a very astute decision, as when his Hampstead studio was bombed in World War 2 in 1940, Hitchens took his wife and young son and fled there as a safe haven. When the family first moved there was just a caravan on site.
