Innes visited Collioure on the Mediterranean coast of France near the Spanish border three times, first in 1908 with fellow artist John Fothergill. Drawn initially by the heat and location, Innes became enamoured with the vibrant colours and light and painted the picturesque harbour several times. He returned twice more in 1910 and 1912-13.
