He became a full-time watercolor painter in 1977. He and his wife operated an art gallery until 2008. Nearly all of his paintings are inspired by the landscape and shoreline of Door County. Having been familiar with the County for sixty years, he has witnessed many changes, so he tries to capture scenes before they disappear. As Gerhard Miller said,
