Jack Beaumont Earl, born in Durban, South Africa, 1908. Jack arrived in Australia with his family in 1911. Most of his childhood was spent on remote Darnley Island in the Torres Straight where his father was appointed administrator/schoolteacher. He learnt to sail with the Islander children in dugout canoes.

A founder of the Sydney-Hobart yacht race, Earl sailed Kathleen Gillett in the first race in 1945. 2 years later, the ketch (named after Earl's wife) circumnavigated the globe, only the second Australian yacht to do so.

First owner, Jack Earl, equally well known as a marine artist and yachtsman had sailed his previous yacht the double-ended ketch KATHLEEN GILLETT in the first Sydney to Hobart race, and then undertaken a circumnavigation of the world. Jack initially approached Payne with sketches of a double-ender similar to KATHLEEN for ocean racing and cruising.
