May 25, 2008 · Jack Marlowe Wise, painter (b at Centerville, Iowa 27 Apr 1928; d at Victoria, BC 20 November 1996). Jack Wise made significant contributions to Canadian art but he will be best remembered for his connection to the "Pacific North West School" tradition that includes Mark Tobey and Morris Graves, amongst others.

A prominent western Canadian painter, printmaker, draftsman, illustrator and educator, Jack Wise (aka: Jack Marlowe Wise) was born in Centerville, Iowa. He moved to British Columbia, Canada in 1963 and over the years lived in various places in the province such as Nelson, Cosy Cove (about 10 miles east of Vancouver), Texada Island, Denman Island and Victoria, where he died.

Jack-Wise---Assoc-. Born in Iowa in 1928, Jack Marlowe Wise came to Canada's West Coast in 1963, where he remained until his death in 1996 to become an influential painter, teacher and mentor to many artists around him. He was founding teacher at the Victoria College of Art, and also taught a number of years at the Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts (MISSA), at Pedder Bay Inlet.
