James Bostock was born in Hanley, Staffordshire. He studied at the Royal College of Art, London. The influence of Eric Ravilious and John and Paul Nash can be seen in his work. Unlike other engravers Bostock drew directly on the block with a burin, thus creating the white areas positively, a method the artist described as ‘puritanical’.
