Eisen (1790 - 1848 ) Born to the well-known calligrapher Shigeharu, Eisen worked as a painter, printmaker and illustrator in Edo during the 19th century. As a young man, he studied Kano painting with Hakkeisai before pursuing illustration and printmaking under Eizan. It is said that Eisen was a brothel owner and held the reputation of a debaucher and a man of questionable personal conduct.

Keisai Eisen (渓斎 英泉, 1790–1848) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist who specialised in bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women). His best works, including his ōkubi-e ("large head pictures"), are considered to be masterpieces of the "decadent" Bunsei Era (1818–1830). He was also known as Ikeda Eisen, and wrote under the name of Ippitsuan.

[Eisen was] the son of Ikedo Yoshikiyo, a Kano painter of Yedo, a writer and a well-known cha-jin or tea ceremony expert. Eisen thus had a much higher social position than most of the Ukiyo-ye artists and was familiar with both the Tosa and Kano methods of work.
