James McBey (23 December 1883 – 1 December 1959) was a largely self-taught artist and etcher whose prints were highly valued during the later stages of the etching revival in the early 20th century. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters by Aberdeen University. ID: 6139167

McBey enlisted in the military in 1916. His pictures of the Somme led to his appointment as an Official War Artist. In 1917 he was sent to Egypt where he completed some 300 watercolors of the campaign in Egypt and Palestine. v McBey visited America in 1929, where he met Marguerite Loeb in Philadelphia.

Feeling he recognised the scruffy character before him, he approached the man and to McBey’s surprise, it was the very subject of the painting, T.E. Lawrence, the hero of the Egyptian campaigns.

McBey started producing his etchings when working as a bank clerk in Aberdeen and in 1907. In 1910 he set up a studio in that city and became a full-time artist. His main influences were Whistler and Rembrandt, and many of his early works were of coastal scenes in the area. During the First World War he was an official war artist in France and Palestine. After the war McBey took over a studio in London.
