James Sanford Ellsworth (1802-1874) was an itinerant artist who worked primarily in the Connecticut River Valley and the Berkshires from the 1840s to the 1850s, doing miniature watercolors on paper. This three-quarter length portrait of Elvira Warriner standing has one of the typical Ellsworth conventions: the gray, clover-shaped cloud over the sitter’s head.
