Jan Davidsz de Heem, (born 1606, Utrecht, Neth.—died April 26, 1684, Antwerp), one of the greatest Baroque painters of still life in Holland. His most numerous and characteristic works are arrangements of fruits, metal dishes, and wine glasses; compositions of books and musical instruments; and examples of the popular “vanity of life” theme, with such symbolic articles as skulls and hourglasses.

Jan Davidsz. de Heem was born in Utrecht in the Netherlands in 1606. His early style is reminiscent of Balthasar van der Ast, who may have been his teacher. In 1625, de Heem moved to Leiden, moving again in the 1630s to Antwerp. He spent lengthy periods in Utrecht, and was a member of the Utrecht guild between 1669 and 1672.

Nearly a decade later, in 1635, De Heem moved to Antwerp and entered its Saint Luke’s Guild. A year after the death of Aletta in 1643, the painter married Anna Ruckers, a native of Antwerp. Although he would spend many years in his wife’s hometown, De Heem also spent periods of time in the north, including an extended stay in Utrecht in 1649.
