Sadao Watanabe (artist) was born on July 7, 1913 in Tokyo. His father died when Sadao was only 10 years old. Later the young boy began an apprenticeship with Serizawa Keisuke (1895–1984), a textile dyer. Textile dyeing is regarded as an art in Japan and has a lot in common with the Japanese form of stencil printmaking called kappazuri.
