She is the niece of famous artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye and sister to Rosemary Petyarre, Evelyn Pultara and Greeny Purvis, all painters with established reputations. Jeannie was born in the early 1950s at Boundary Bore, an outstation on the Utopia homelands, 270km north east of Alice Springs.
