Jack Swanson (California, Minnesota, 1927 - 2014) Realist and traditional painter and sculptor of the West, Jack was born in Duluth, Minnesota in 1927 and has lived in Carmel Valley, California, where he was raised. At fourteen he was already breaking horses.
One of the early members of the Cowboy Artists of America, Swanson is considered the premier artist of the California vaquero and the horse & cow culture of the Pacific Slope region of the West. The book is lavishly illustrated with Swanson’s artwork - over 100 paintings, drawings and bronzes along with stories and personal photographs.

Jack Swanson was born in 1927 in Duluth, Minnesota to Margaret and Leonard Swanson. The family moved frequently during the Great Depression, and in 1942 came to Oakland, California. Teen-aged Jack headed south to work on at the Dry Creek Ranch, 10,000 acres of rolling San Joaquin rangeland.
