Born in 1921 on a dairy farm in Sussex to an English father and a Scottish mother, Joan Eardley’s life changed dramatically in 1926 when the family farm failed and her father had a breakdown. William Eardley had fought in the First World War and never got over the trauma suffered as a result of being gassed in the trenches.

Apr 29, 2020 · A recent article in The Herald bemoaned the lack of a plan for Glasgow Museums to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Joan Eardley in 2021 and we can perhaps all agree. It would without doubt have been immensely popular and the first major public show since her Memorial Exhibition in the city in 1964.
