As a teen he got work as an extra on a Tom Mix Western filmed in the area, became interested in motion pictures and took off to Arizona for more movie work. Then fate stepped in.

May 29, 2018 · Joe De Yong enjoyed the authentic nature of artist Jo Mora's (1876 - 1947) work in his 1946 book "Trail Dust and Saddle Leather" and later in Mora's 1949,posthumously published "Californios." Both books influenced a number of the stories he would write and illustrate for Western Horseman magazine from 1948 - 1950.
