John Arthur Fraser is the author of “A scamper in the Nor’-west,” Outing and the Wheelman (Boston), 5 (1884): 83–90, and “An artist’s experiences in the Canadian Rockies,” Canadian leaves (New York, 1887), 233–46. A number of his tinted portrait photographs dated from 1861 to about 1868 are held in the McCord Museum, Notman Photographic Arch.

This unique work is the only recorded view of the Quebec City area painted by John Arthur Fraser, who was renowned for his sumptuous landscapes of the Eastern Townships and the Rockies. Dated 1866, when Fraser was at the beginning of his Canadian career, this watercolour is also among the artist’s first known landscapes.
