John M Boyd was born in 1942 in Port Glasgow. The son of a pharmacist, John also went on to qualify with a Pharmacy BSc at Glasgow University before commencing work as a pharmacist in Port Glasgow. A self taught artist, for many years painting had been regarded simply as a hobby until the suggestion was made that his work could be worth reproducing for the retail print market.

John Boyd was a prolific painter and showed his work in twenty one-man exhibitions, represented by galleries in Glasgow, London, Eton and Edinburgh.
