Buchanan, John. 1819–1898. Draughtsman, botanist, artist. This biography, written by Nancy M. Adams, was first published in the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography in 1990. John Buchanan is said to have been born on 13 October 1819, at Levenside (Strathleven), Dunbartonshire, Scotland. He was the eldest of four children of William Buchanan and his wife, Nancy Somerville.
