John William Casilear (1811–1893) John William Casilear was born in New York City, and in 1827 began work as an apprentice in the studio of the engraver Peter Maverick. After Maverick’s death in 1831, Casilear continued his studies with Maverick’s pupil, Asher B. Durand, who recognized his artistic talents and encouraged him to paint.
